Arts and Crafts - Minneapolis, MN, US
We are women and femmes artists of color and cultural activists who engage audiences through visual and emotional experiences, build community, and move toward equity and beauty. We believe in the transformative power of dance, and create original, contemporary dance theater at the intersection of artistic excellence and social justice. Our telling of the stories about the lives and dreams of global women changes the landscape of mainstream culture, builds understanding about arts and social justice, and empowers artistic voices.Since 2005, we have premiered one new work annually with commissioned music, performed in nine U.S. states and the District of Columbia, and toured to Trinidad, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Palestinian Territories, India, and Bangladesh. Our practice includes (1) concert stage productions; (2) workshops, classes, and dialogues with women and girls from refugee, immigrant, indigenous, and of color communities; and (3) participatory performances that invite people who do not identify as dancers to join in dancing that embodies possibilities of moving together, negotiating space, finding rhythm, and sharing humanity with people they do not know.We believe creative processes can galvanize communities to harness power and build a different future. Our community-embedded artistic process ties into broader trends in social and cultural policy, and helps identify opportunities and address disparities with power and creativity. Our Shawngram Institute for Performance & Social Justice provides a base to create and hone artistic works as it convenes artists and community members to share stories through classes, workshops, rehearsals, visual exhibits, public talks, and literary discussions.
