Individual & Family Services - Charlotte, North Carolina, United States
ANSWER Scholarship was founded in 2006 by Susan Andersen, who is the Executive Director. ANSWER's Mission is to assist women raising school-age children in fulfilling their dream of earning a college degree, while creating the desire, the expectation, and the priority of a college education for their children to follow in their footsteps. Many working mothers in Mecklenburg and surrounding counties long to make a better life for themselves and their children. But they don't have the financial resources to pay for college and keep their families afloat at the same time. ANSWER, a 501(c )(3) nonprofit offers scholarships to mothers with school-age children. Through a competitive application process, we award scholarships to mothers pursuing a four year bachelor's degree or a two year nursing or a two year nursing or IT degree. Each scholarship recipient is partnered with a volunteer mentor who offers support and guidance on managing the challenges of balancing family, work and school. Scholars also benefit from professional development coaching on resume writing, networking skills, professional branding and other important topics. Scholars have access to a network of professionals from diverse industries and backgrounds. Our program works! ANSWER scholars have an 80% graduation rate, compared to 39% for other non-traditional college students and that national statistic is 29% if the nontraditional student is a mother. Your contribution will help give women in our region the education they need to secure good jobs They example they set will inspire their children to learn. That's especially important in Charlotte. Upward mobility for children living in poverty is more challenging in Charlotte than any of the country's 50 largest cities.
