Appropriate IT (AI) is a for-profit social enterprise that harnesses the power of technology to advance social justice, equitable access and inclusive international development. Our team of professionals, which spans the information technology, finance, non-governmental and nonprofit sectors, is committed to creating sustainable solutions for social change. AI does this through two lines of activity: the Appropriate IT Innovation Lab and the Appropriate IT Development Academy (AIDA).Our Innovation Lab is the research & development home for the NGO and NPO sectors. We provide applied research and incubator services to explore emerging technologies, pilot innovative solutions and establish collective ventures. The lab has the freedom to explore completely uncharted territories, searching for innovative, cross-functional and cross-sectoral solutions to long-standing social issues across: web applications, mobile applications, big data and robotics. It functions as a testing and incubation center, piloting new ideas with the aim of identifying and cultivating those that work.Appropriate IT's Development Academy (AIDA) is a learning program developing today's youth, particularly girls and young women, into highly-skilled, employable and socially-engaged leaders of tomorrow. Free software development training for underprivileged girls and young women are subsidized with high-quality, fee-based corporate training in workforce development. Through training around the world, AIDA prepares youth to close the employability gap, become full participants in the global economy and develop into active citizens in their communities.Appropriate IT was originally founded in 2007, shifting to piloting and testing this current iteration of our model in 2012. We are a benefit corporation with a managing team based in Washington, DC, training centers and teams around the world.
