Design - Chicago, IL, United States
archi-treasures uses art and design as tools to bring people together, create social connections, and strengthen communities. Many of Chicago's neighborhoods are faced with crime, vandalism, poverty, and other issues. Traditional approaches to these issues are segmented and isolated from a community context. archi-treasures' community participatory programs work on both an individual level and a community level, taking into consideration the individual and how they connect to their peers, family, and community.Founded in 1996, archi-treasures was formed by architects and members of community development organizations who recognized the urgent need for Chicago communities to organize, build capacity, and participate in the redevelopment of their neighborhoods. They understood that when people are involved in making decisions about their own surroundings, they have a greater connection and sense of respect for what's around them.archi-treasures has completed over 120 projects that contribute to the livability of some of Chicago's most underserved neighborhoods. Creative professionals and community members participate together to design and then implement community ideas. The results are tangible—community parks, mural workshops, and outdoor movie screenings—and intangible. People feel proud of what they've made and where they live.
