Food Production - Acharacle, Scotland, United Kingdom
Ardnamurchan Distillery opened in July 2014. One of the most remote Scottish distilleries, located on the Ardnamurchan peninsula, a wonderfully secluded 'finger' of rocky land that stretches out to the furthest westerly point of the UK, just to the north of the Isle of Mull, and south of the Isle of Skye. Unique to the whisky industry, all the power and heat requirements for the Ardnamurchan Distillery come from local renewables - the river that provides the distillery's cooling water has a hydro-electricity generator and the biomass boiler is fuelled by woodchip from local forestry - the overall footprint of the distillery is a light one. In addition, the by-products of the whisky-making process are recycled on the peninsula - the still energy-rich draff is combined with the pot ale to produce animal feed for use on the peninsula. Ardnamurchan Distillery was the first distillery to adopt Blockchain Technology to provide a secure and immutable model of the full supply chain that describes the production of our whisky. We track each and every finished bottle of whisky and see each bottle as a unique asset and, through the use of QR codes and smartphone scannable technology, deliver individual data to our customers that interacts with our bottles. This allows the story of each bottle of whisky to be told directly to the customer, because we can prove every step of the production process (thanks to the blockchain), allowing the consumer to discover the provenance of their very own bottle of Ardnamurchan, right back to its origin. The Ardnamurchan Spirit series was a successful way to share the direction of early sherry maturation. The 2016/AD & 2017/AD Spirits were limited to just 2,500 bottles for the world. 2018 & 2019 were doubled to 5,000 bottles. AD stands for both Anno-Domini and Ardnamurchan Distillery. In the autumn of 2020, the distillery will be launching its first Single Malt, watch this space...
