Hello and welcome to the Army of Masks*!It all started with a phone call from our longtime family friend, Dr. A, a deployed US Air Force neuroradiologist whom we met while living in Doha, Qatar. Weeks before the pandemic became big news in the United States, Dr. A called to warn us about the impending disaster. He called everyone he cared about out of concern about what was to unfold and you could hear the urgency in his voice. He understood the scope and implications of the pandemic, the impact on families who would need to quarantine, and the impending crisis in overwhelmed hospitals.Dr. A asked me if I could sew and I said yes. He passionately urged, "make masks for yourself, your family, your friends, your neighbors, and then for local hospitals." He knew well in advance that we would be facing national shortages in personal protective equipment and that anyone who could sew fabric masks would be able to make a real difference.Dr. A was so energized that he sent me money to purchase a sewing machine and fabric. He insisted I go immediately to the fabric store to secure supplies. He said make 1,000 masks or more! It was a call to arms and I started sewing masks.We talked again a couple of days later. That day, I had spoken to my confined elderly parents in Alsace, one of the epicenters of the pandemic in France, and I was in such shock about the devastating news reports that I started crying while talking to Dr. A. I explained that there was only so much one can do in the face of an event of this magnitude. I told him that maybe I should start a Facebook group and spread the word. He agreed right away and this ultimately led to me creating the Army of Masks on Friday March 20, 2020. This is how it all started.
