Hospitality - Biel/Bienne, Canton of Bern, Switzerland
The Art Déco Hotel Elite is an establishment with a great tradition, making it a true emblem of the city of Biel/Bienne. Which, if nothing else, has to do with the "Red neighbourhood".The Elite was built between 1929 and 1931 with the old railway station behind it.The architect in charge was Karl Frey who dedicated himself to the "New Building" style. In keeping with the times, the hotel was decorated in the best Art Déco style. The Volkshaus was completed a year later. Ever since, these two buildings have together dominated the cityscape around Guisan Square. The listed building was subject to extensive building alterations in the years 1942 and 1945.It enjoyed its heyday in the golden 1970s and 1980s, before the great watchmaking crisis. At the turn of the millennium, the hotel was completely renovated at a cost of around 20 million Swiss francs. In 2014, the Elite was taken over by Poli Immobilien AG who provided it with a new business concept. This includes the letting of the associated businesses. So Migros Aare came on board to run the "L'Osteria" restaurant on the ground floor and the "FlowerPower" fitness and wellness centre on the first floor. Even the Rooftop restaurant L'Entrecôte Bienne on the sixth floor with views over the city is not run by the hotel. The building alterations necessary for these operations lasted until the end of autumn 2015.
