Arts and Crafts - , Maharashtra, India
The art village is a physical manifestation of a creative space where Artists, Filmmakers, Painters, Photographers, Architects, Yogi's, Musicians, and Theatre personalities come together to invent, create and share their philosophies and methods of practice through workshops, festivals, talks and performances. The members are spread all over the world and visit occasionally to engage with the space, as they are all practising artists. Our space is created for creative collaboration of thoughts and people from different walks of life. Here we hope to nurture growth and learning. We're nestled in the hills of Karjat on the outskirts of Mumbai city, India, about a 90-minute drive from the International airport in Mumbai. We're spread over 15 acres of Farm Land that comprises of a Man-made Lake, a boutique homestay called the Tooth Mountain Farm, a Nursery with a bonsai village and the Art Village campus with staff quarters. All the materials used to build the village are from the earth - the architecture is in earth construction, complemented by recycled wood and thatch roofs. The project comprises three residential cottages, a recreation centre, common toilet blocks, an earth café with a country style kitchen and an open to sky amphitheatre. Each cottage has two rooms and has been constructed using adobe mud blocks. The philosophy of the village is community living and so the cottages have been designed with that in mind. The recreation centre is equipped with art supplies, a gallery space, a printmaking corner, a pottery set up with an electric wheel and an open-air amphitheatre for performances and a set up for viewing short films and documentaries. At the Earth cafe, we offer fresh satvic food and urge guests to get fresh produce from the local village, ‘Hatnoli gaon', a cycle ride away. The kitchen roofing is done in vernacular terracotta tiles.
