Artbeat is a nonprofit performing arts presenting organization that tours a broad array of cultural events to cities and towns throughout the U.S., focusing primarily on communities that are underserved and well off the beaten track. Founded in Ashland, Oregon in 1987 by David Shaw, whose presenting background includes management of the Everett Performing Arts Center (EPAC). At EPAC, Shaw presented a diverse roster of music, dance and theater events, ranging from primitive music played on improvised instruments by Brazilian master artists Uakti to Paul Dresher's Slow Fire. In the late 80's Shaw undertook the renovation of the Old Ashland Armory and began presentation of arts programming for the local community. Today, Artbeat presents cultural events throughout the country, from Wenatchee, WA to Gainesville, FL, and from Visalia, CA to Woonsocket, RI. Most of the communities that we serve are off the beaten track, populated by residents who are eager to attend live performances but who lack opportunity. Often, these towns and cities have under-utilized performance spaces; in some cases, Artbeat has been instrumental in revitalizing a community venue. Our business model is based on cooperation: Artbeat commits to the presentation of a show (or shows), guaranteeing performance fees, and the local presenter commits to cooperating in publicizing the event and securing hospitality. Artbeat's roster has consistently offered a diverse range of programming, from Native American flutist R. Carlos Nakai to Shirley Valentine (starring Helen Reddy) and Forever Tango. Our 2010-2011 roster includes Emmy Award-winning guitarist Benise in The Spanish Guitar; Shanghai Acrobats; the Moscow Circus; productions of Ain't Misbehavin', Five Guys Named Moe and In The Mood, a musical theatre revue showcasing the dance and music of the Big Band era of the 1940's.
