Located in the heart of Brooklyn, the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health utilizes a model of community health empowerment and engagement to promote health equity and social justice through strategic partnerships, innovative community-based health promotion & research programs, and preparation of a more diverse and inclusive workforce of health professionals.Founded in 1992 by tennis legend and civil rights pioneer Arthur Ashe, the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health (AAIUH) is a Brooklyn-based community health empowerment & education agency that reaches thousands of individuals per year. AAIUH's mission is to reduce health disparities and improve health outcomes for underserved group; its vision is the development of an equitable healthcare system that reduces health disparities, improves outcomes for underserved communities of color, and better prepares a more diverse and inclusive healthcare workforce. AAIUH's services remain informed by Mr. Ashe's values of justice, service, inclusiveness, and excellence.AAIUH is a leader in developing and replicating programs that promote community health outcomes. AAIUH' s Community Outreach Programs provide health education and advocacy programming at nontraditional venues (e.g., barbershops and hair salons), our participation in the Brooklyn Health Disparities Center (in partnership with SUNY Downstate Medical Center and the Office of the Brooklyn Borough President) aims to eradicate health disparities affecting minority communities in Brooklyn, and our Health Science Academy exposes students of color to the health sciences in order to increase the representation of women and people of color in the healthcare and health sciences fields.
