AshaUSA is a Minnesota based non-profit organization primarily focused on providing education, tools, and programs through community engagement and partnerships to help promote health & harmony in the South Asian community. The South Asian community in the United States includes individuals who trace their ancestry to Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. The community also includes members of the South Asian diaspora – past generations of South Asians who originally settled in other parts of the world, including Africa, Canada, the Caribbean, Europe, the Middle East, and other parts of Asia and the Pacific Islands. According to the 2010 census data, over 3.4 million South Asians live in the United States. Indians comprise the largest segment of the South Asian community, making up over 80% of the total population, followed by Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Nepalese, Sri Lankans, Bhutanese, and Maldivians. The South Asian population in Minnesota has more than doubled since 2000 (21,925) compared to 2010 (44,461). According to the 2010 Census, the South Asian population is the second largest Asian immigrant group in Minnesota with over 44,000 South Asians currently living in Minnesota (Council on Asian Pacific Minnesotans, 2012).With the increase in population we are also seeing challenges with assimilation, health, and family conflicts like any other immigrant community. However many of these are overlooked as the Asian American community is considered a "model minority". The concept of the "model minority" was created to characterize the Asian American community as a highly successful racial group that has assimilated through their hard work, dexterity, and law-abiding behaviours. The "model minority" myth has serious consequences for the health outcomes of South Asians because it oversimplifies the connection between wealth and health in the community.
