AstroJays - The Johns Hopkins Rocketry Team Details

The AstroJays are a team of Johns Hopkins University undergraduates dedicated to learning how to design, assemble, and launch rockets. Each year, the team participates in the SpaceSport America Cup where over 1,100 students and faculty from more than 70 institutions, gather to collaborate and compete at a world class spacesport facility. The competition typically involves the designing building and flying of high powered rockets containing a significant payload in a professional setting. Our team is composed of young engineering students with background knowledge in mechanical, electrical, chemical and software engineering that strive, through excellent teamwork, to innovate and explore in the aerospace and aviation industries. The team consists of 6 sub-teams:1. Avionics - Gathers data from sensor symphony in the rocket to determine flight path and other telemetry information.2. Payload - Designs the payload bay within the rocket and decides the scientific purpose of the rockets launch by performing a scientific or engineering experiment i microgravity environment.3. Propulsion - Safely provides the thrust to achieve the rocket's target apogee.4. Recovery - Tasked with providing nominal stage separation, parachute deployment and ground recovery of the rocket. 5. Structure - Ensures that the rocket is light, aerodynamically sound and retains structural integrity throughout the entire flight. 6. Simulation - Models the rocket's trajectories with a high degree of accuracy and fidelity prior to flight using Computational Fluid Dynamics Software. Our team is excited to continue to push the frontier of science by creating the future aerospace engineers of America.
