Construction/Agriculture - Atascosa, TX, US
11 million tons of asphalt shingles waste is generated in the US each year. Demolition tear-off roofing shingles are an unnecessary burden on our landfills. It is estimated that one ton of recycled shingles is equal to one barrel of oil. At Atascosa Recycling in the San Antonio, Texas area, we have two roles. We are an asphalt shingle receiving center and a processor of recycled asphalt shingles (RAS) for paving roadways, parking lots, aprons and pathways.RAS has a very high oil content. Newly paved asphalt surfaces can utilize RAS up to 4% content for less expenditure, with the same service life and durability as virgin materials.Atascosa Recycling is a Texas Department of Transportation pre-qualified RAS supplier as described in DMS-11000 "Evaluating and Using Nonhazardous Recyclable Materials Guidelines".We are a part of the solution to reuse and recycle. Municipalities and paving contractors need to look again at using RAS to supplement their asphalt binder with RAS. The majority of asphalt binders are imported so the use of RAS will ultimately lower the demand for virgin binders,
