AuRIns was initially formed as a research cluster under the Faculty of Pharmacy which later evolved and recognized as a university center of excellence (CoE) called Institut Kajian Ubat Semulajadi (iKUS) in 2004. In 2007, iKUS was declared a cost centre and provided with its own budget. In 2008, Prof. Dr Jean-Frédéric Faizal Weber Abdullah was appointed as its first Director. iKUS moved to it new home in the Puncak Alam Campus together with Faculty of Pharmacy in December 2009. In October 2011, the conferment of Honorary Doctor of Science by UiTM to a leading scientist and scholar in the field of natural product from Pakistan, Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman FRS, took place and led to the decision by the University Executive Committee to rename the institute as ‘Atta-ur-Rahman Institute for Natural Product Discovery' in December 2011.
