The Auburn University Department of Philosophy is a vibrant philosophical community of teachers, researchers, and students. We offer Auburn undergraduates a major in philosophy, as well as minors in philosophy and philosophy and religion. The Department boasts award-winning teachers, small class sizes, and a level of individual attention which belies the University's size. Its faculty enjoys an international reputation for excellent in research, most especially in the areas of aesthetics, early modern and analytic philosophy, and philosophy of science.We pursue the study of philosophy both historically and analytically, exposing students to the great philosophers and philosophies of the past and of the present.The Department teaches high standards of reading and writing and conversation. It expects students to become adept at criticizing the views of others and their own views.Relevant lessons are taught in the classroom, in informal discussion, in colloquia, and in the Philosophy Club. The Department sees its faculty and students as philosophers working together to become better philosophers.
