Australian Bedding Stewardship Council Details

End-of-life mattresses are a growing problem in Australia. Placed end-to-end they would stretch from Darwin to the tip of Tasmania . Many of them end up in landfill and some even on our streets. The Australian Bedding Stewardship Council (ABSC) is a not-for-profit, industry partnership established to tackle this problem. We are a product stewardship program that aims to get mattresses and bedding out of landfill and off our streets to be recycled. We work with supply chain, manufacturers, retailers and recyclers to move towards a circular economy for mattresses. The ABSC partners with key stakeholders to improve recycling outcomes for bedding products from start to end of life. Mattresses cause significant issues in landfill, taking up valuable space, breaking down slowly and burying non-renewable resources. There is also a consistent problem of illegal dumping by the community because mattresses are a bulky, heavy item that is difficult to dispose of. All this leads to unsafe landfills, unsightly kerbsides and unnecessary carbon emissions [or resource loss].The ABSC is the answer. We're working on solutions that make recycling easy for consumers, so they can share the responsibility for their used mattress. We work with supply chain and manufacturers to utilise inputs that work towards a circular economy for mattresses and bedding. We engage with retailers to encourage recycling at the time of purchase. Finally, we work with mattress recyclers to maximise diversion outcomes, research new recycling opportunities and create sustainable jobs.

The Australian Bedding Stewardship Council (ABSC) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to tackling the growing problem of end-of-life mattresses in Australia. With the mission to get mattresses and bedding out of landfill and off the streets, the ABSC works with various stakeholders to promote recycling and move towards a circular economy for mattresses. The ABSC partners with supply chain, manufacturers, retailers, and recyclers to improve recycling outcomes for bedding products from start to end of life. By engaging with retailers to encourage recycling at the time of purchase, the ABSC aims to make recycling easy for consumers and share the responsibility for used mattresses. Additionally, the organization works with mattress recyclers to maximize diversion outcomes, research new recycling opportunities, and create sustainable jobs. With the ABSC's efforts, mattresses and bedding can be recycled and reused, reducing the amount of waste in landfills and minimizing the negative impact on the environment. By promoting sustainable practices and collaborating with industry stakeholders, the ABSC is working towards a future where mattresses are designed with recyclability in mind, and waste is minimized.

In Australia, old mattresses are becoming a big problem. They take up a lot of space in landfills and can take a long time to break down. Some people even dump them on the street, which looks bad and can be dangerous. The Australian Bedding Stewardship Council (ABSC) is a group of people who want to solve this problem. They want to make sure that old mattresses are recycled instead of thrown away. They work with companies that make, sell, and recycle mattresses to make it easier for people to recycle them. They also want to make sure that the materials used to make new mattresses are sustainable and can be reused. By doing this, they hope to reduce the number of mattresses in landfills and make the environment cleaner and healthier.
