The Australian Networked Security Clearance Project was a private sector start-up created to establish Australia's first whole-of-government platform for filing and managing sensitive personal data and related applications. For the first time ever, the pilot project allowed individuals to enter their security clearance data into a secure database, one single time, to be be reused whenever required. In the past, it was necessary to enter this data by hand on every single form required by the various Commonwealth agencies involved in any given application. Different agencies had multiple forms (of up to 45 pages) with overlapping data requirements. Consequently, applicants for security clearances faced hour upon hour of handwritten work, which had to be repeated for any subsequent application to a new agency, or for routine security clearance reviews.Discussions about the concept and early design were held with the Department of Defence; the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation; the Australian Federal Police; and Parliamentary staff. Ultimately, however, the Commonwealth Government directed Defence to consolidate the government's security clearance operations into a new business group, and as part of that initiative to create its own networked clearance platform using public sector employees. The Australian Networked Security Clearance Project was therefore closed in late 2007.
