The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) is a transformational initiative that aims to create a coherent national research data commons, facilitating innovation, collaboration, and research translation. With a focus on delivering a world-leading data advantage, the ARDC works with sector, government, and industry partners to provide researchers and the eResearch community with access to state-of-the-art data-intensive infrastructure, platforms, skills, and collections of high-quality data. Based in Caulfield East, Victoria, the ARDC is a relatively new initiative, formed on July 1, 2018. However, it builds on over 10 years of experience in research data infrastructure and services, legacy initiatives such as the Australian National Data Service (ANDS), National eResearch Collaboration Tools and Resources (Nectar), and Research Data Services (RDS). The ARDC's five strategic themes include coordination and coherence, people and policy, data and services, software and platforms, and storage and compute, ensuring a nationally coordinated resource for Australian researchers. Led by CEO Rosie Hicks and Manager Emma Crott, the ARDC is committed to creating a culture that supports collaboration and innovation, providing researchers with the tools and resources they need to succeed. With a strong focus on community engagement, the ARDC works closely with its stakeholders to ensure that its services meet the needs of the research community, fostering a culture of collaboration and data sharing. The ARDC's vision is to create a data commons that supports the development of new research insights, innovation, and economic growth, positioning Australia as a leader in the global research landscape. By providing researchers with access to high-quality data, infrastructure, and services, the ARDC is helping to drive cutting-edge research and innovation, ultimately benefiting society as a whole.
The ARDC is a program that aims to improve the way researchers work together and share information across Australia. We want to make it easier for researchers to access the data and tools they need to do their job well. Our goal is to create a national research data commons, which means a shared space where researchers can find and use data, tools, and resources. We're working with universities, governments, and industry partners to make this happen. We have five main areas of focus: 1. Coordination and coherence: We want to make sure that researchers have access to a wide range of data and tools that work well together. 2. People and policy: We want to encourage a culture of sharing and collaboration among researchers. 3. Data and services: We want to make sure that researchers have access to high-quality data and tools that are easy to use. 4. Software and platforms: We want to provide researchers with the tools they need to analyze data and work together. 5. Storage and compute: We want to make sure that researchers have access to powerful computers and storage systems to help them work with large amounts of data. We were created in 2018, but we build on over 10 years of experience in providing research data infrastructure and services. We're committed to continuing to provide services that researchers can rely on to create better research data outputs.
