Government Administration - Augusta, Sicilia, Italy
Two Ports, Augusta and Catania, under one Port System Authority, both being part of the Scandinavian-Mediterranean corridor. The Scandinavian-Mediterranean corridor is a crucial axis for the European economy, since it links the major urban centres and economic areas in Germany, as well as Italy to Scandinavia and the Mediterranean. It begins at the Finnish-Russian border, crosses Finland, Sweden (with a branch to Norway) to the European inland. Then it runs southbound to Germany, Austria and finally to Italy crossing it from the north to the south (Sicily) continuing then to Malta. The Port of Augusta is included in the Ten-T Core Network as a strategic port of the European Union due to its central position along the international traffic routes. It has more than 250,000 sqm of equipped yards. It is mainly an industrial and oil port and inside the port there are shipyards, repair, storage and refueling sites. A large part of the port has moorings and equipment also for tourist/pleasure boat uses. The Port of Catania is located right in the center of the Mediterranean basin, equidistant from the Suez Canal and Gibraltar and the Eurpean and African Ports. It has a total surface of one milion square meters including yards and water mirrors.. Its characteristics give the port a main and decisive role in the development of national and international maritime traffic, including cruise lines activities.
