HOW ONE LITTLE BOY'S LEGACY HELPED RAISE MORE THAN $3.4 MILLION IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CHILDREN'S CANCER Bailey Tessier was just two-and-a-half years old when he tragically passed away from a brain tumour in 2004. Bailey was being treated at the Monash Hospital at a time when there was a significant shortage of paediatric oncologists, meaning children with cancer only had access to treatment two, half-days, per week at Monash. In high demand, Dr Peter Downie divided his time between the Monash Hospital and the Royal Children's Hospital. Fast-forward 16 years and more than $3.4 million later, that little boy's legacy has since funded the training of 17 new paediatric oncologists and made it possible for children with cancer to be treated every day of the week in the hospital where he was treated. After Bailey lost his battle with cancer, Patrick Tessier, a successful businessman and passionate father, identified a need for greater support for training new medical professionals and established Bailey's Day to raise much-needed funds for the now Monash Children's Hospital. Dr Peter Downie, Head of the Monash Children's Hospital and the doctor who treated Bailey Tessier, says he is in awe of the continued impact Bailey's Day has had on the hospital and its patients. "The contribution that Bailey's Day has made to the medical industry in Australia is undeniable, but it is the affect that Bailey Tessier's legacy has had on thousands of children in this country fighting cancer that will forever be immeasurable," said Dr Downie. Moving forward in 2020, Bailey's Day will continue to raise vital funds in support of the Monash Children's Hospital, as well as supporting cancer research as they strive towards finding a cure for children's cancer.
