The following institution got established in 1946 as a two-year Azerbaijan State Institute of Teachers named after Mirza Fatali Akhundov. In 1952 it was reorganised into a four-year Pedagogical Institute of the Russian language. Known as Baku Slavic University since 13 June 2000. Currently, the University possesses over 3,000 students, 25 academic departments, 9 educational and cultural centres, 7 faculties, and 5 research laboratories. Among 12 internationally-known Honoured Doctors of Baku Slavic University, take their places Vladimir Putin, Ivan Plyushch, Patriarch Alexy II, Sergey Mironov, Zhelyu Zhelev, Konstantinos Stephanopoulos, Georgi Parvanov, Viktor Yushchenko, Lech Kaczyński, Alexander Lukashenko, Karolos Papoulias, Sergey Naryshkin, and Mladen Ivanich.
