Last century has been witnesses of the discovery and recovering of the Baldomero Alejos photography archive. He is recognized as one of the best Peruvian photographers of the past century. His artistic legacy, of more than 60,000 images, is the visual testimony more complete, documented and valuable of more than 50 years of social, civic, religious and cultural life of the Ayacucho society (1924-1976). The Baldomero Alejos photography archive constitutes and invaluable cultural nation heritage in Peru not only in artistic but also historical level. The city of Ayacucho, isolated from the capital, was the scenario in which he portraited a traditional complex society, of landowners and indios, that changed slowly as a result of diverse democratization process, pulled economic structures down, opening to the crossbreeding and continue modernization. In this context, the permanent residence of Baldomero in Ayacucho and the central ubication of his photographic studio, allowed him to portraited the society in its whole and continuity, unlike other contemporary photographers. Also, the images of the photographic archive show us an Ayacucho in peace times. Few years after the death of Baldomero en 1976, a serious internal conflict started in this city which was extended for more than 20 years and spread in all the country (1980-2000). During this stage the photographic archive was kept and its images of peace were replaced for those of sadness and pain. Paradoxically, and a sign of hope, its at the end of this cruel years, that the archive was discovered and showed, bringing with him a positive connotation. In this order, the photographs constitute a powerful visual tool of historical memory and search of identity that allow the Peruvian population recover and rebuild its society. And Ayacucho, through the images of Baldomero, is not longer the symbolic scenario of the origin and increase of the internal conflict but a referent of peace and national reconciliation.
