Behind this façade lies a country with the third fastest growing sex trafficking industry in the world. Sex trafficking has become one of the pillars of the Dominican economy, generating more than tourism at a shocking US$9.5 billion each year. The Dominican Republic is a source, transit and destination point for human trafficking. Femicide is now the primary cause of death among women of reproductive age in the Dominican Republic. 1 in 4 women in the Dominican Republic have faced sexual violence before the age of 15. 4 out of 5 minors who are victims of sexual abuse are under 15 years of age. With only two shelters operated by the government nationwide, there is inadequate protection for these victims of violence.
