The Bavarian Academic Center for Latin America (BAYLAT) is a Bavarian-wide service institution of the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts (StMWK) and promotes networking between Bavarian and Latin American universities, research institutions and governmental entities. BAYLAT works with 20 Latin American countries within the concept of science diplomacy, cooperation diplomacy and higher education diplomacy. It has the task of raising the profile of Bavaria as a center for technology and innovation as well as science and education in Latin America. BAYLAT was founded in 2007 through the initiative of the Friedrich Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU) and consolidated in 2009 through a target agreement with the former Bavarian State Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts. Based in Erlangen, BAYLAT has since acted as a service institution in the sense of the internationalization strategy for all public universities in the Free State of Bavaria.
