BEDROC is the successor to the NGO Coordination and Resource Centre (NCRC), a platform set up by SIFFS, SNEHA and UNDP with the approval of District Administration, for ensuring equitable and sustainable post- tsunami relief and rehabilitation activities in the district of Nagapattinam. As NCRC, the coordination platform has been involved in the various sectors of Fisheries, Agriculture, Shelter and Children (mainly those who have lost single or both parents in the tsunami). With the tsunami rehabilitation phase to a close, the relevance of the platform also tapered off with respect to tsunami related issues. However, in the course of the rehabilitation interventions, NCRC realized that Nagapattinam, being vulnerable to repeated disasters due to its proximity to the sea, its long coastline (187 Kms) and its large proportion of citizens dependant on natural resources for their livelihoods, needed long term solutions to ensure the livelihood security of a community always prone to small and large disasters.
