Existing agriculture ecosystem is inefficient, opaque, and slow with multiple layers of middlemen at each step before food reaches our table. On one end, farmers are left at the mercy of these middlemen to sell their produce at throwaway prices. On the other end, consumers pay 5 - 10x the price farmer gets paid. This problem has gut-wrenching consequences at farming households (~ 150 million farmers) – going deeper into debt, not able to educate their kids and not able to support basic life necessities. There are three major problems faced by farmers - lack of real-time information, inefficient price discovery and delay in accessing credit. We believe we can solve these problems with Tech and AI at scale. At belliya, we are building communities for the marginalised farmers in India. We want to re-imagine the ideal way of life for millions of farmers wherein they can live their life with dignity, and are able to educate their kids. This will not only transform their livelihoods but also unlock the immense potential of the Indian economy.
