Hospital & Health Care - Wilton, Connecticut, United States
Passionately inspired by her 10 year old son's courageous and untiring battle with a rare form of pediatric brain cancer, Teri Gaberman learned of another courageous battle being fought by Bobby Murcer, the former NY Yankees centerfielder and sports announcer who was suffering from a comparable and incurable form of brain cancer. As her son, Aaron befriended Bobby, a common bond between ballplayer and fan emerged. From this friendship, Teri Gaberman created Berni & Murcer – Friends for LifeTM.Berni & Murcer – Friends for LifeTM is a non-profit charitable 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to provide emotional support, comfort, inspiration, and encouragement to children and their families with life threatening illnesses at all stages in their journeys to get well - from the treatment phase, to recovery, to wellness maintenance, and the child's re-integration into the community. Families of children with life threatening illnesses often face a long and exhaustive road towards recovery, and become focused on the overwhelming task of managing treatments, schedules, and finances - all while maintaining their daily lives and relationships. Quite often, the more humanistic needs of the child, like dignity, creativity, encouragement, and comfort are overshadowed by the medical protocol. This therapeutic caregiving recuperative program supports those emotional needs by providing children and their families with the necessary tools and continual support through educational resources, inspiring stories, and entertainment anchored in the adventure, love, and loyalty of two Bernese Mountain Dogs, Berni & Murcer, who will become their "Friends for Life."TM
