The Better Sourcing Program is a supply chain due diligence assurance program designed to implement a global, comprehensive and transparent approach to responsible and conflict-free sourcing from artisanal and small scale, small-scale and semi-mechanised mining operations. The Better Sourcing Program also works with downstream participants in the supply chain that are increasingly exposed to a number of risks beyond conflict minerals regulation, and with the increased scrutiny of their supply chain must respond to reputational, commercial, operational and socio-political pressures. At pilot stage, the Better Sourcing Program's primary focus is be to help compliant producers in countries covered by Section 1502 of the Dodd Frank regulation obtain or regain access to international conflict-free markets. This will be achieved by assuring that due diligence for the upstream (mine to smelter) part of the mineral supply chain is performed in accordance with relevant internationally recognised frameworks for supply chain due diligence - in particular the OECD Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Sourcing of Minerals from Conflict Affected and High Risk Areas - and existing industry programs for smelter level validation - in particular the Conflict-Free Smelter Program.
