The Biotherapeutics Laboratory within the Department of Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine aims to develop targeted therapeutics for advanced brain tumors and other cancer types. With a vision of driving biomedical innovation through multidisciplinary research, our approach focuses on developing a biomolecule modulation-based therapeutic strategy to target hard to treat tumors. By utilizing extracellular vesicles that are secreted by various cells as delivery vehicles, we envision to modulate microRNA within the tumors and develop clinically translatable combinatorial therapeutic approaches to alleviate tumor burden and improve the quality of life in affected individuals. Our therapy development and validation comprise of formulation, in vitro imaging and mechanistic evaluations, and in vivo assessments of therapeutic efficacy, safety, and tolerability in clinically relevant experimental systems.
