Black voices telling Black storiesThe Black Diasporas project, by afrOURban in collaboration with Simba Mafundikwa, documents the experiences of Black individuals and the spaces and places that have meaning to them in New York City. The project manifests as a geolocated digital archive of interviews of Black people, defined in this project as including people of African ancestry, who have been brought by force or made their way to the United States since 1619 and the colonization of the AmericasThrough this project we commemorate our Black biological and cultural ancestors, we pay homage to those who have fought to make a space and place for Black people to exist in freedom on this continent and in this city. We acknowledge that those of us who are more recent arrivals could not exist in this space without the work done by the generations of Black people that came before us. Over time the archive will be expressed as public exhibitions of art, in spaces and places that have meaning to artists, interviewed people, and Black society.Filming & Direction by Kalu OjiDesign & Branding by MRPJ DesignsWebsite by Gwinyai ChakondaWe acknowledge this project takes place on the unceded lands of the Munsee Lenape, Wappinger, Carnasie & Matinecock. We acknowledge their communities, their elders both past and present as well as future generations. We commit to the process of working to dismantle the ongoing legacies of settler colonialism.
