Blues/Jazz Theory is an Afrocentric approach to teaching Jazz Improvisation by exploring the ways in which the melodic and harmonic elements of the Blues interact with Western tonalities. It interprets the "language" of Jazz improvisation using principles based on linguistic analysis to bring new understanding to the melodic and harmonic operations that are distinct to Jazz and Blues idioms and the various styles of popular music derived from them. The analysis is supported by a variety of exercises and etudes that are designed to help students and teachers develop familiarity with these musical elements and develop fluency in "the language of Jazz".
