In the absence of physical symptoms, no methods currently exist for definitive diagnosis of blast TBI. The main manifestation of mild blast TBI and its mechanism--diffuse axonal injury--isn't visible using existing CT or MRI equipment, nor can it be seen using blood tests. Current detection screenings (the MACE 2) have a clinical window of <24 hours, where milder TBIs may not have begun to produce noticeable symptoms. Treatments can aid recovery prevent chronic symptoms but must be promptly administered. A need exists for a device that can determine and indicate the occurrence of an overpressure event, as well as approximating the level of pressure exposure.
