Insurance - Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
Brokoop was founded in 1969 with the intention of providing specialist plantation insurance for private timber growers. It started with that perennial game-changer, a drive to save money. In 1969, Craig Anderson, the Chairman of the SA Timber Growers Association (SATGA) at the time, found an alternate insurance market to cover timber plantations. Lightbulb moment! Anderson realized that instead of using outside brokers, it would be more viable and feasible to take matters into their own hands and with the approval of the SATGA General Committee, the Timber Growers Co-operative Insurance Brokers Limited was formed with the objective to insure private ‘timber-growers' plantations. Soon thereafter they expanded their offering to include general short-term insurance, and that is the start of the Brokoop journey!1985 – 1998In 1985, Craig Anderson resigned as Chairman, succeeded by Bruce Ferguson until 2003. New blood joined the Board when Bailey Bekker, a driven and motivated timber-grower who became a pivotal figure in our history. Over the years, with a steady leadership from the Board, that remained almost completely unchanged from 1989 to 1998, Brokoop had remained focused on their clients and their insurance needs and expanded at a steady rate – a testament that we were doing just what the marketplace needed.2006On 30 September 2004, the Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services Act, 2002 (FAIS Act) came into effect, requiring Financial Service Providers to have a licence. In March 2006, Brokoop was issued with a license by the Financial Services Board (FSB), now known as the Financial Services Conduct Authority (FSCA). 20192019 heralds Brokoop's 50th anniversary and in an era of "here today, gone tomorrow" that is a milestone worth celebrating!
