Brotherhood of St Laurence Details

The Brotherhood of St. Laurence (BSL) is a social justice organisation working alongside people experiencing disadvantage to address the fundamental causes of poverty in Australia. We believe no one should live in poverty. It’s why we exist. Our purpose is to advance a fair Australia through our leadership on policy reform, our partnerships with communities, and the quality of our services. We think differently and take a unique approach to address the fundamental causes of poverty in our community. Our approach is informed directly by the people experiencing disadvantage and uses evidence drawn from our research, together with insights from our programs and services, to develop practical solutions that work. We are proud to be a strong voice for people experiencing disadvantage. It has been our way since the 1930s when Father Tucker’s activism for social reform amid the Great Depression led to our inception. And today, all Australians can be part of the change. Together, let’s make change that lasts for an Australia free of poverty. The Brotherhood of St Laurence is a non-profit organization located in Fitzroy, Victoria, Australia. Founded in 1933, the organization's vision is to create an Australia free of poverty. To achieve this vision, the Brotherhood delivers services to people and families in need, develops policy, and supports social change. Their work focuses on various groups, including children and families in the early years, young people transitioning from school to work, adults seeking employment, and older people facing the challenges of aging. Additionally, the organization pays particular attention to issues related to refugees and asylum seekers. The Brotherhood's programs and services are designed to promote social inclusion, job seeker services, community development, and financial inclusion. They offer a range of services, including vocational training, child and family services, and aged care. The organization also engages in research and policy advocacy to address the root causes of poverty and inequality. The Brotherhood operates several businesses, including community stores and an online second-hand bookstore, to raise funds for their programs and provide employment opportunities. They also have a strong online presence, with a website, Facebook page, Twitter account, and YouTube channel. For over 80 years, the Brotherhood of St Laurence has been working to make Australia a better place for everyone. We want to help people in need, families, and communities to have better lives. We do this by providing services, creating policies, and supporting changes that benefit society. We focus on helping children, young people, adults, and older people. We also pay special attention to people who have come to Australia seeking safety and protection. We have programs that run across the country, like HIPPY and Saver Plus, which we do with other organizations. We also have local programs and services, like Youth Foyers, Stepping Stones, Given the Chance, and Brotherhood Training. We have businesses, like our community stores and online bookstore, that raise money for our programs and give people jobs.
