Humanity faces unprecedented challenges in climate change caused by natural resource depletion, green gas emissions, unsustainable waste management, and deforestation. These together with the growing world population threatens future food security.BugEra (Bugheera) - Insect Biotechnology for a Sustainable Future is an Israeli based start-up originating from Ben-Gurion University Life Science Department and is supported by the Israeli Innovation Authority.BugEra is the developer and producer of the novel Black Soldier Fly (BSF) strains and specializes in genetic engineering for insects. The Black soldier Fly (BSF) is a magnificent insect with unique biological traits that contribute to solve all the above challenges and close circular economy loops by recycling organic waste into valuable products. We improve and increase the fly's natural traits by introducing genetic editing and modifications resulting in the patent-pending Modified Black Soldier Fly (M-BSF) Platform. The M-BSF Platform gives rise to novel, sustainable and safe products introducing new potential markets and revenue streams for the BSF industry.BugEra first product/strain double and more the fly-oil volume, without changing any of the protein and oil characteristics, thus making it commercially profitable as a much-needed novel biomass feedstock for the renewable diesel and biodiesel industry. BugEra stain allows the expansion of the BSF farming industry to a new and huge market and enables new circular economy opportunity. BugEra has graduated from the Ben Gurion University accelerator – Oazis, was a finalist in the 2021 Women in AgriFood National Competition, and was selected to the 2021 Israel Lean Launchpad of the Merage Institute.
