Food Production - Encinitas, California, United States of America
John Smit Sr. immigrated to the Unites States in mid 1950's with pennies in his pocket, but big dreams to own his own land. California provided the soil and opportunity to do just that. Though he was originally a dairy man, when he saw orchards planted all around him, he quickly realized the new opportunity was in producing fresh fruit. It started with the original planting of Gala and Fuji apples. From the evolution of Smit Farms came California Fruit Company. Paul, the youngest of seven siblings, realized that a key to customer satisfaction is controlling the supply chain and selling direct to retailers. After the "early days" California Fruit Company has aligned with some of the finest farms in the San Joaquin Valley of California.
