Recreational Facilities & Services - Sooke, British Columbia, Canada
Camp Barnard located in Otter Point, just west of Sooke on Vancouver Island, is a 250 acre camp used year round by a variety of youth and adult organizations to deliver their programs. Short and long-term residential camping, wilderness camping, and day use opportunities are available in a safe yet challenging environment, at very reasonable rates.Camp Barnard provides excellent rental facilities for the youngest/least experienced camper to develop skills and confidence in a residential camp setting, working down to the more rustic cabin circles, out to the back country to more advanced and adventurous leave-no-trace camping.Accommodations at Camp Barnard range from backcountry tenting to bunkhouses and large commercial kitchens to the lodges with sleeping lofts, indoor plumbing, commercial kitchen, activity hall, and much more. Plan activities using our grassy playing fields or in a Douglas Fir forest; observe salmon heading upstream or take a hike to an arid mountain top. At the centre of camp is Young Lake, a 17-acre lake with swimming area, boat house with canoe rentals, and a lake trail. Young Lake is big enough for a good paddle and small enough for a really great ramble around it. A picnic area and fire pit are located on the beach and offer a spectacular view while dining or roasting marshmallows after your swim. The lake is stocked with coho fry and trout by the Sooke Salmon Enhancement Society- bring your fishing rod! Our lake, streams and wetlands are a part of the DeMamiel Creek watershed; coho can be seen in good numbers in late fall making their way up Mckenzie Creek to spawn.
