Education Management - Oakland, California, United States
Camp Common Ground's vision is that Bay Area middle school youth, particularly those from negatively stereotyped groups, feel that their identity (e.g., race, class, sexual orientation, disability) is valued. Our mission is to cultivate meaningful relationships between youth of different backgroundsWe recruit a cohort of 30 - 40 youth leaders, who attend our two-week, overnight summer program. During their first summer, our youth learn about identity and social norms that privilege certain identity groups over others. They learn a series of discrete empathy and leadership skills that help them: (a) build relationships across cultural lines, and (b) understand and disrupt social norms that exclude members of specific identity groups in social settings. Each young person writes a plan for how they will apply the skills they learn to disrupt social norms in their schools related to race, gender, popularity, sexual orientation, and disability that exclude some of their peers. The following school year, each young person participates in three leadership retreats, during which they strengthen the relationships they had built during the summer and receive support in implementing their school-based plan. At the final leadership retreat each young person presents what they did to families and incoming youth to the program.----Some quotes from our families:"The impact was astonishing. My child came home with more confidence and social comprehension than I had ever thought she would develop in her teen years. She made great friends that gave her a sense of belonging that she has never really found among her age group.""He was initially concerned about going away for 2 weeks, but he LOVED the camp! One of his first comments to me was 'Mom, I learned to converse so openly and vulnerably.' Thanks Towns and Zach!!""My daughter has learned to use social skills and feel a sense of belonging despite differences in likes, background, socio economic, etc. CCG Rocks!"
