The Canadian Hair Loss Foundation was created in 2014 as a non-profit organization with the goal to support research and education in hair loss.Hair is important to people and this has been true since the earliest civilizations and what we learn from the ancient writings. Hair loss has a profound impact on the way many people feel about themselves and how people present themselves to the world.There are over 100 reasons for hair loss. Some types of hair loss conditions are more common than others. Male and female hereditary thinning for example affect about 50 % of the world. In contrast the hair loss condition alopecia areata affects about 2 % fo the world and some types of scarring hair loss conditions affect 0.01 % to 0.001% Hair loss can affect all ages from children to the elderly and affects all people from every part of the world.Tremendous progress has been made in the past 40 years to understand the main types of hair loss and how they develop. The precise reasons that humans develop these various hair loss conditions is still not clearly understood. Although treatments for many hair loss conditions has improved greatly in the past decades, treatments for other conditions remain non existent.Hair research is needed to further advance our understanding of these conditions and to improve treatments. Moreover support is needed to train healthcare practitioner to accurately distinguish between the 100 causes of hair loss and to recommend proper treatment.
