The C.A.R.E. Team is a non-profit, Canadian-based volunteer group of Anesthetists, Surgeons, Nurses, and Patient Care Support Staff who are committed to making a difference in the lives of individuals who do not have access to healthcare due to economic or social barriers. We are brought together in a belief that we can provide help in the form of access to medical and surgical services by sharing our time, skills, and expertise with those in need.In doing so, our goal is to improve the overall health of individuals and families in any area of society whose population is in need of medical care. Our first surgical project took place in Antigua, Guatemala in July 2015. Over the course of one week, we provided gynecological and general surgery operations for members of the local Mayan population that has been historically disenfranchised and under-serviced. We completed our second surgical trip in July 2016 and were able to provide 74 life-changing operations in 5 days. Our third medical mission to Antigua took place in July 2017 where we continued our work with another outstanding team of volunteers. In 2017 we supported a local plastic surgeon, Dr. Lourdes Santiso, provide surgical care to a number of young patients with burns requiring surgical management. In July 2018 we returned to Antigua with another outstanding team of volunteers to provide general surgery, gynecological surgery as well and ENT operations for 81 people. These surgeries require a significant amount of supplies, equipment and medication, not to mention access to diagnostic and medical imaging, along with access to surgical rooms and a hospital facility. There is so much that is needed on a daily basis: surgical drapes, gloves, sponges, sutures, and medications – such as, anesthetics, analgesics, and antibiotics. The list is lengthy, but together with your support and generous donations we can make a difference!
