A year and a half ago we established a nonprofit, Cascadia Volunteer Advocacy, and volunteer in their spare time to assist the homeless in our community here in Bellingham.Our mission statement is to promote harm reduction, survivability, and resiliency for the street community and their advocates using compassionate social interaction as our basis. We operate under the social learning model which means that all of our volunteers and core members have either experienced homelessness, experiencing homelessness or have been affected by the issues of homelessness. This gives us a perspective for the target community because we have shared their living experience.
