Casey Pease ran as a young, progressive candidate in the 2018 Democratic primary for state representative in the rural 1st Franklin District in Western Massachusetts. With eight candidates on the ballot and 19 towns in the district, Pease won 4 towns, placed second in 5, and placed third in 2. And thanks to a dominating social media presence and incredibly strong ground game, the campaign supercharged turnout in many of the towns we won—with many seeing their highest ever turnout in a state or presidential primary.Back in the 2016 presidential election, Clinton had won Pease's hometown of Worthington easily, defeating Trump by 2-to-1. Yet in this eight-way state primary, Pease alone exceeded Clinton's vote tally in the town. And this phenomenon of massive, high double-digit turnout was not isolated to Worthington—Pease finished roughly tied for second place despite coming from the least populated part of the district and its second smallest town.
