Each year in the U.S., 3 to 5 million central venous catheters (CVCs) are implanted into patients suffering from various diseases, including cancer, kidney failure and Crohn's disease. CVCs are vital for the administration of chemotherapeutic drugs, infusion of nutrients, and the removal of vascular waste. Despite the prevalence and usefulness of CVCs, catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs) are one of the leading causes of hospital-acquired infections. CRBSIs, which can lead to fatal sepsis, have an associated mortality rate of 25% and an annual burden of over $5 billion on the American healthcare system. We are CatheCare, and our mission is to eliminate CRBSIs in the United States and the world. To this end, we seek to achieve several goals: efficacy, safety, and ease-of-use. We have developed CASS (CatheCare Sterilization System), a first-of-its-kind, attachable device that eradicates 99.9% of bacteria, continuously sterilizes even during line access, and does not contribute to bacterial resistance. CatheCare is a unique, compatible, and easy-to-use device that save lives.
