The Center for Animal Law Studies (CALS), in collaboration with the Animal Legal Defense Fund, is home to the Animal Law Program and animal law projects and activities of Lewis & Clark Law School. We work to ensure the interests of animals are considered in the legal system and provide the best education to the next generation of animal law attorneys.Lewis & Clark Law School has been a leader and pioneer in the field of animal law education since 1992. In 2008 a historic collaborative effort between the Law School and the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) created the Center for Animal Law Studies (CALS). We educate and support law students and legal professionals interested in animal law through classes, conferences, scholarship, and clinical opportunities.CALS offers the most extensive animal law curriculum in the world. Students may choose from a wide variety of courses focusing on animal-related issues. Lewis & Clark law students may also specialize in animal law by earning an Animal Law Certificate. In addition, students may participate in our Animal Law Clinic, the Animal Law Summer Program, the Animal Law Review, the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund, the annual Animal Law Conference, and the National Animal Law Competitions hosted by Lewis & Clark Law School. In 2012, CALS took another leap forward when we launched the first of its kind, post-J.D. master of laws (LL.M.) specializing in Animal Law. This program is designed for U.S. and international law school graduates who wish to focus on animal law in practice, teaching, research, or public policy.
