The Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility was organized in 1989 as a private, non-stock, non-profit organization involving the different sectors of society in the task of building up the press and news media as a pillar of democratic society. Its programs uphold press freedom, promote responsible journalism, and encourage journalistic excellence.CMFR is duly accredited by the Philippine Council for NGO Certification (PCNC) as a donee institution with certificate of registration no. 065-2010. PCNC is a private voluntary, non-stock, non-profit corporation that certifies non-profit organizations that meet established minimum criteria for financial management and accountability.CMFR is engaged in a range of activities and efforts: * To protect and strengthen the press as a pillar of democracy * To establish a framework of responsibility and ethics in the practice of the press * To raise levels of competence for coverage of special areas of news * To promote journalistic excellence * To engage different sectors of society in the growth of a quality press in the Philippines
