Central Himalayan Rural Action group (CHIRAG) is a Non-Governmental organization, registered in 1986 by Mr. Kanai Lall. CHIRAG based in Nainital district, of Uttarakhand, seeking to facilitate an improvement in the quality of life and increased self-reliance of rural communities, especially women and poorer sections in the Himalayas.Vision:"To be a catalyst for the creation of a society rooted firmly in the principles of dignity, justice and solidarity."Mission is "to improve the quality of life of rural people – especially the poor and women – in the Himalaya". We attempt this through interventions in health, education and natural resource management, and by providing access to diversified livelihood. We promote the sustainable ownership and management of common resources by the community.CHIRAG started work in the year 1986 on the issues of community forestry and health in a few villages in Ramgarh and Dhari blocks of Nainital district. Till 2020 CHIRAG's work has impacted the state of Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh and Meghalaya. CHIRAG follows an integrated development approach through sustainable natural resources management, promoting and supporting innovative and sustainable income generation programs using local resources, providing access to knowledge and information, and capacity building of the communities. In the Natural Resource Management (NRM) sector, projects include Social Forestry, Soil and Water conservation, Watershed development, Agricultural and Horticultural development and Alternate Energy Programs. In the Social sector, the focus is on Education, Health, Women's Empowerment, Community mobilization and the formation & maintenance of Savings and Credit groups.
