A time and a place to think From The Economist Intelligence Unit November 2010Of course, it may have been the presence of others on the course that many found off-putting. For city dwellers – who constitute the majority of office workers – getting away from other people may be harder than finding the time to think. Open plan offices are noisy and full of interruptions, and overheard telephone conversations grating. And while your boss may be re-assured if you stare silently at a computer screen, he may feel differently seeing you, chin on fist, staring into the middle distance. There are still fewer opportunities for deep thinking outside the office. Home may be full of excitable children; city parks are crowded and infested with over-confident pigeons, and it's hardly a refuge when it's raining. Working at a café pavement may seem romantic, but nattering and cigarette smoke from the next table, to say nothing of cheesy café music or nearby road drilling, can break the deepest concentration. (Parisian philosophers might disagree.) Some have suggested using earphones to fill your head with classical music or Gregorian chants, or even an electronic buzz. This cuts out the disturbances but it also limits how deep your mind can delve.
