Centro Espigas is an educational center located in Puntas de Manga, in the north west area ofMontevideo. Most of the people who attend to the center come from nearby neighbourhoods, but many others come from a long way, because in this area many rural establishments arelocated.Through Retonio Foundation, Baroness Nina Von Maltzahn chose this area to develop aproject, in order to provide attention to educational needs of vulnerable children. From a previous experience with El Hornero educational centre in 2002, Centro Espigas openedin 2005 with a CAIF (children up to 3 years old) and a Club de Niños (with children from 4 to 12years old, (who come before or after school shifts). Both programs work in agreement withINAU.After a reestructure of previous projects, in 2015 Proyecto Simiente was born, to supportprimary school students of fifth and sixth degree. Innovative, it was created to developchildren´s capabilities and to bring them better opportunities into their educational life. Since2016, these students have absolute priority accessing to Liceo Espigas. Moreover, Centro Espigas offers a balanced nutritional menú, that includes breakfasts, lunchesand snacks. Many of the fruit and vegetables used at Espigas come from own production, which ensure a healthy and tasty diet. In addition, we offer primary health care through theservices of Urgenterap medical assistance. 499 children are directly benefited through ourcenter, and other 850 indirectly. For each Project Centro Espigas has team of professionals specialized in education, socialsciences and recreation workshops, who work with responsability and commitment.
