Cheerleaders for Children is a not-for-profit charitable organization whose mission is to use the goodwill and image of professional cheerleaders from the NBA, NFL and NHL to promote health and fitness among disadvantaged children, especially those with special needs. The cheerleaders will not only perform for and meet with the disadvantaged children themselves at events specifically designed to promote health, fitness and overall well-being but, in addition, will engage in public appearances, educational seminars and events to enlighten the public and increase awareness of the challenges faced by these children and their families, and educate the public as to what they can do to help.Cheerleaders for Children develops programs to address major health and social needs of disadvantaged children. For example, obesity is perhaps the single largest health issue facing children in the United States today. Over 17% of children are obese, and that is now at a pace to double every five years. Obesity is the major cause of diabetes, hypertension and heart disease, and also contributes to bone and joint problems. Disadvantaged and special needs children are especially prone to this problem. Cheerleaders, as a result of their rigorous diet and exercise regimen, present a perfect role model for the avoidance of obesity and its harmful consequences. Our cheerleaders will present programs developed specifically to address the unique issues faced by this group of children.
