The Chester Group was established in 1973 and consists of five divisions, Chester Wholesale Meat, Congella Cold Storage, Chester Butcheries, Chandling International and Hummingbird Investments. The Chester Group imports a variety of beef, mutton, pork, poultry and vegetables from South America, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Spain, Denamrk, China and Belgium. It is one of the largest meat wholesalers in South Africa, the company operates its own clearing and forwarding department which imports an average of 120 containers, over 3000 tons per month. The Chester Group employs over 1800 employees nationally.
